When I picked this book at the Post Office a few weeks ago, I was a bit underwhelmed because it looked smaller than I had anticipated. But as they say great things come in small packages, after reading a few pages of it, I decided to use it for our family devotion. It is that practical.
Sword words is a dynamite of a book. The author Dr. Mirriam Kinai is well intentioned from the beginning, something that dawns on you as you read on. It is not a self-help book, neither is it psychological or philosophical. It is a book that teaches you how to bring bible verses to life and use them for everyday living.
Sword words recognises that all Christians are engaged in a spiritual battle and it is important that they be equipped for the same.
But why sword words, why that title?
Well, it is because sword words are power filled words from the bible that you can use to fight your spiritual battles. They are called sword words because the sword of the spirit … is the word of God (Ephesians 6:17). Sword words are derived from the word of God and are used as swords to strike the wicked spiritual forces.
The book emphasizes a basic truth, that the bible has answers to all our life questions. Even Jesus had to use the word of God when he was tempted by the devil.
The other weapons of the warfare highlighted in the book are truth, righteousness, the gospel, faith and Salvation. All which are well expounded on.
The book goes on to help you as a warrior understand who you are in Christ and what God has entrusted you with. It also shows you that you are not alone, that those with you are greater than those with the enemy.
Communication during war is very important, writes Dr. Mirriam. It is almost as important as the war itself. You need to keep the communication lines with your Commander in Chief so that you can send an SOS, ask for help or direction and also receive instruction on how to proceed.
Communication tools are well tackled in the book.
As a Christian it is important to understand who you are up against. You should not be obsessed with the enemy, but you should be able to discern him. The author makes this important distinction, that your enemy is not people.
You will be mistaken to think that sword words is just a shallow book full of bible verses.
It gets practical real quick which makes it very helpful for daily living. It is not the kind of book that you shelve after reading, its one that you keep close, referring to it occasionally or using it as a devotional over and over.
So here is the practical part.
The author engages you to identify what the devil is using to attack you, where your thoughts of fear, defeat or anxiety are coming from, basically the source of your temptations and then she guides you to on how to pick a sword and deal with that particular issue.
An example is given of someone who is unemployed and in dire need of money to settle their bills. Such a person needs to identify the negative thoughts that is part of the arsenal the devil is using to keep them down. To fight the negative thoughts the person needs to go through scripture and find the word that oppose such thoughts.
Thankfully Dr. Mirriam has compiled all those verses in this book. She has done not only for unemployment but also for family, marriage, ministry, health, business, work, prayer, salvation and many more. There are also sword words for situations such as fear, addictions, discouragement, loneliness, worry, weakness, vengeance, despair, discouragement and others.
Here is a quote from the book that caught my attention
With your sword words you will be able to refute and nullify theories and reasoning such as ‘I was born this way, I can’t change, it’s my life I can do whatever I want with it, it’s my innate nature’
The timeliness of this book cannot be emphasized enough especially in today’s young generation.
Sword words encourages you to stand, to be strong and courageous and never to give up.
It is a book for fighting temptations, for destroying strongholds, for living a free life, for overcoming the enemy and for living a victorious life in Christ Jesus.
